Why is my computer hanging in the middle of Windows XP repair?

After removing a virus from my computer - possible_otorunb was its name I think, despite my anti-virus software - trend-micro internet security, insisting it had completely removed it following several full virus scans in normal mode and safe mode, I was still encountering a rather frustrating symptom. that is that the computer was freezing, most often at the point where I typed my password to log into windows, but also minutes or hours after logging on. I'd have full functionality up to the point of the freeze which would usually be triggered by the opening of a file from explorer, or the start of a programme. I also had two other symptoms, similar to each other. One was a repeated popup concerning a driver I was installing for a USB MIDI keyboard controller, with a security warning asking me to choose between stopping or continuing the installation. it would continue to pop up, whichever option I chose, even after the device was successfully installed and I was happily using it. The other symptom was a recurring dialogue box in outlook with a trend micro spam plugin asking me if I wanted to add contacts to the approved renders list. Whether I clicked yes or no it would keep coming back. I had an ideal system restore point from just before the last thing I remember doing before the trouble started, which was to download and install a replacement version of logitech setpoint which had been playing up. I believe the setup file I downloaded was the source of the virus. However system restore wouldn't rollback. it just did nothing when I clicked next after choosing the restore point. Trying again in safe mode didn't achieve anything either. so not being able to think of anything else to try I decided to do a windows repair. only, it's hanging in the middle of the install. I got as far as confirming the country settings and entering the serial key, but shortly afterwards, when it gets onto Installing Network, with the green progress bar about a third of the way along it stops progressing.

it works pretty slowly up to that point but at least progress is perceptible. The time remaining says 31 mins. From previous experience that estimate is usually erring on the long side. However nearly two hours later the progress bar is in the same place and it's not even gone down to 30 mins. It's not completely frozen to the same extent as the problem I was having in windows. The green square animation continues to run in the bottom right, and it's still cycling through the windows feature descriptions. I can still turn caps lock on and off unlike in the case of the freeze problem. I can hear the hard disc murmuring, but for all I know that could just be general handshaking. any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Turn off system Restore and download Malwarebytes Anti Malware.or do
the first and reset to factory settings or from your recovery disc.you would lose all you have on your system though.or Ad-Aware is giving and improved version away for an anniversary.Go to File Hippo and put it on.It
gets rid of most.Don't know what your using, so can only say.if your using
Acer to reset from factory settings. On turn on before the logo shows press
and hold down for 8-10 seconds.Ctri +F10.if DELL or HP.Ctri +F11.Turn off
System Restore first and you have to get the connection right.or switch off
and try again.

chances are its faulty memory, if you have two sticks in, take one out in turn and try the reinstall. there are other reasons like faulty psu, mobo, hard drives but memory is a favourite for this. also if you do have two sticks, it won't cost you anything to try it.
