Question for U.S. retirees: I know the Social Security Administration says to apply for benefits three months before you retire, but I'm curious about real-world experiences. If you're collecting SS, how much time elapsed between your application and the arrival of your first payment?
I applied early and my first check was the first month of my 62nd birthday.
Thanks for asking this. I was wondering too as will turn 62 next year. I'm so excited for that birthday and hope there's money left for us.
I did exactly that. Applied ninety days prior to my retirement-first payment came the first month. Just like I was told. due to my birthday being on the 24th, payment shows up about the 27th or 28th every month.
If you apply when your supposed to you will get your first payment when you reach that certain age either 62 or for my self 65 plus 8 months.
i applied like three months before i turned 62 and they told me my check would arrive before the 2nd Wednesday of every month and not later than the 12th!!! and right on schedule it drops into the account!!!
It was approximately two months before I chose to retire. and the
first check wasn't received until one month after I officially became
my retirement age.How long before getting first social security check. How long does it take to get your first ss check.
Turned 62 in Feb, received 1st check 2nd Wed in April..applied 3 mo prior to my birthday..9 years ago
In my case, it was 2-3 months, but most people get turned down a few times, because SS is hoping they'll give up & go away. In my case my doctor told ME that I couldn't work anymore, instead of me going to him & begging him to fill out the form. Once my disability from the post office was approved, SS went right through.
For me it was about 3 months. I am a widow and draw on my husbands and I'm still employed so I only draw about half the year. I wish they would just cut those checks in half and send me one every month. I asked, it's just not done
It will be 2 months before first check
you file about 2 months in advance so they can check everything out and than when your birthday gets here you have to wait one month before you get on it than the next month you will get your first check and it's based on the week of your birthday.
if your birthday is first of the month your check will be deposited the 1st wed. of the month if 2nd' week then deposited the 2nd wed and so on.
