Heading into last month’s Thanksgiving Day weekend, the buzz was about how horrible things had become at airports in the country, with security beefed up. tales were being told in the national media about virtually obscene body scanners and equally suggestive pat-downs.

What I had seen on television nearly made me sorry that earlier in the month I had made reservations for a trip to Aruba for my wife and me.

What would I face when I went to the Huntsville International Airport the day after Thanksgiving?

Two-plus years ago, I had total knee replacement, which means I set off an airport scanner every time I get near one.

We had traveled a few times since that operation — to London and Paris 18 months ago, along with domestic trips to the Northeast (Manchester, N.H., airport), Minneapolis and Anchorage. each time, I submitted to the pat-down after setting off the metal detector. each time, it was a minute or so of a pat-down.
